No time for fluff or filler, let’s get right back into our interview with Chew Fu. And if you can’t wait to get to the music, go ahead and click through and start peeping day two of exclusive joints for your next radio mix… hint hint

NoVegans: When we’re discussin business with other deejays, the name Chew Fu always gets mentioned and it never fails, everybody’s always like man that dude’s sound is sick. Tell us about your process for finding and “chewing” up that next hot joint.

Chew Fu: I stay diggin’ in the crates and I’m constantly researching what’s next to stay ahead of the curve. In fact we have a member on our team responsible for keeping my inbox flush with tomorrow hottest shit today and uncovering that obscure classic gem that has yet to be touched. Shout out to Shaft!

Whenever I touch a track I set out to make a classic…In some cases a new classic from an old classic and in other cases, a classic from a joint that’s not yet a classic. Put that in your computer and process it!

But for real… It’s all about the WOW factor for me… When a DJ sees the title of my remix I want her/his response prior to hearing that joint to be… “AM I READING THIS RIGHT… I KNOW CHEW DIDN’T JUST REMIX THAT JOINT… IMPOSSIBLE… IT WILL NEVER WORK.” After hearing the track their initial response will invariably be followed by…. “ARE YOU KIDDING ME… THAT JOINT IS BLAZIN’… I CAN’T BELIEVE HE MADE IT WORK….HE PUT THE LIME IN THE COCONUT AND DRINK IT ALL UP…FOR REAL”

NoVegans: You definitely gotta lotta peeps drinkin what you be servin up. So let’s keep with that theme of how you do what you do. Which is it? Old school – new school – software, hardware, instruments… you tell us.

Chew Fu: I’m pretty loyal to LogicPro for Mac. You could say that I use them pretty exclusively… so much that I’m surprised that somebody from Logic hasn’t approached your boy with an endorsement deal or something… hint… hint

Nah… on the real, I take my musicianship very seriously and play all the instruments you hear on my tracks. I am a saxophonist by trade, but have been known to pick up everything from a guitar to some bongos. 99.772% of the tracks I create are devoid of music created and borrowed by a third party… Unless, of course, that third party is me. Truth be told, I have literally spent years creating my own samples from music I’ve composed and played. These Chew Fu-created samples, loops, and sounds serve as the foundation to my music to this day.

NoVegans: Any plans for releasing a Chew Fu samples pack? lol

Chew Fu: I’m currently in various stages of production on four albums for the two labels I own with my business partner onefraz. Amongst the four is my own album…(more on that later)…So…the next release you’ll probably get from me is my own joint…

NoVegans: Aiight aiight – so we know you’re just finishing up a massive international trip, so on the real, what’s next?

Chew Fu: Be on the lookout for your boy this summer in a city near you… I will be in the States and Canada touring. As far as new music is concerned, in addition to the weekly exclusives that I serve up on blogs like Palms Out and NO VEGANS and the production, remixes, and refixes that I’m currently working on for some of your favorite artists, I am putting the finishing touches on my new album entitled “Serial Fixer.” The album features new production and exclusive refixes including a blazin’ joint I did with Hip-Hop Icon Doug E. Fresh called “Do It Like This.”

In addition, I’m finishing up production on “J-Cast for President” the freshman album of Jayson Castor aka J-Cast, the first artist signed to our new Youngstar mbc imprint. I’m telling you the kid has star written all over him and he comes from damn good stock too boot. J-Cast is the son of Funk Soul Legend/Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famer Jimmy Castor, the God father of progressive B-Boy.

Both the J-Cast and Serial Fixer albums are FIRE… what else would you expect… I produced, mixed, mastered and musically arranged all the jizzoints… he he he… We’ve drawn some major interest from quite a number of majors… We’re trying to figure out which one to roll with as we speak… Let’s just say that a couple of them feel Rolling Stone Magazine was on point when they recently wrote that the sound I created was the “FUTURE of Dance Music” But don’t worry, your boy will not be selling out! Never that!!!!

NoVegans: That’s definitely nice to hear, and we know you will do well. Any other collaborations on the forefront?

Chew Fu: I almost forgot to mention the collabo I’m working on with my boy, super producer Jason Nevins, who is a big Chew Fu supporter and was super instrumental in seeing to it that my recent Ghettohouse refixes of Britney’s “if U seek Amy” and the Black Eyed Peas’ “BOOM BOOM POW” where destroying the airwaves at Z100 in NYC.

We got alot poppin’…for real!!!!!!

We hear dat! And we definitely need to do our part to get Chew Fu’s sound heard on radio stations across the nation. That’s why today, we’re reposting Chew Fu’s two most recent club bangers… the extended edits of Britney and Black Eyed Peas. AND for the first time (and for all you radio deejays) we’re putting up the exclusive CLEAN radio edits that Z100 has been rockin (never before released to the public). Get on this folks, and call your local radio station to help spread this blazin sound. Its what we like to call the future of music, and if you don’t know, now you know…
In the blog world, my man Chew Fu needs no introduction. His name is known and his sound is all his own. We had a chance to catch up with him this weekend. He filled us in on what he’s been up to and he surprised us with a NoVegans.com exclusive joint.

NoVegans: NoVegans is a relatively new blog on the international scene. We be steady reppin the Midwest! Our stats tell us we’re pulling in a lot of peeps that have never read a music blog before, and probably a lot that are just discovering your sound, so for those that don’t know Chew Fu, let’s start at the beginning. Man… what’s up with that name Chew Fu? How did you come up with that?

Chew Fu: My crew at PURE actually came up with the name about 8 years ago when I was producing tracks for Bad Boy Records to describe my production process and style. Chew Fu is the sound made during and after I’ve consumed a track and spit out a hot remix/refix. Chew Fu is the sound produced when you take something hot and make it hotter…My business partner once told me that I’m the only person he knew who could actually fix something that wasn’t broken to begin with….that’s Chew Fu.

NoVegans: Now what’s this I’ve read about Perfect Music? Where did that come from? What does that mean?

Chew Fu: Actually, we call the brand of music we do FUTURE-PERFECT or Progressive B-Boy. FUTURE-PERFECT music fuses the best elements from all the genres that we love including authentic Hip-Hop, Soul, Rock, Pop, and of course house. It’s our response to the iPod Generation’s proclivity to create playlists without regard to genre.

Consumers today are far less fixated on genre then in the past. It used to be that if you were a Hip-Hop fan, rock fan, dance fan, etc., you would not color outside the lines of the genre you rep’d for fear of retribution from your peers. Today the only criteria kids seem concerned with is a song’s Hottness. Future-Perfect is synonymous with Hottness.

NoVegans: And to make sure we’re all on the same page, what is your affiliation with Palms Out? And are there any plans for a Palms Out Tour?

Chew Fu: Those are my peoples…Luv Dem Dudes! I am principal musical contributor to the Palmsout Blog… but more than anything, despite my affiliation, I am a huge fan of what those cats are doing. I stay in awe of what they have accomplished, what I know they will accomplish, and of the massive influence they have, particularly in the progressive dance music arena.

As far as a Palm’s Out Tour is concerned, we have discussed the possibility of collectively taking over the world, but are content with conquering NYC and the North East this summer as a precursor of big things to come.

NoVegans: Definitely big things to come – speaking of big things, looks like you’ve been doing a lot of traveling overseas lately. Are you gearing up for an American cities tour as well? Any plans on rolling through St. Louis anytime soon?

Chew Fu: Truth be told, I really need to get to the “Gateway City”… I think we need to build about a NO VEGANS-CHEW FU Midwest-Tour Collabo ASAP.

You hear so much about New York, LA, and Miami, but the amount of love I get from the Midwest is sick… You cats really get it, musically. You could say that St. Louis is like a Future-Perfect city… Maybe it has something to do with the fact that y’all are right smack in the middle of the country and as the Gateway City all Hottness must Pass Go before it collects its $200. Just as my Future-Perfect style of music borrows the best elements from other genres, so too does St. Louis borrow the best elements from its coastal cousins to create a unique identity. Hell, y’all might want to get me a gig working at your local Chamber of Commerce while you’re at it… St. Chew Fu… for real!

NoVegans: LOL! We would love to have you here. Let’s make that happen. Now tell me real quick because the readers want to know, what are you not leaving home without when you’re packing for a tour?

Chew Fu: My saxophone – my Twin Macbook Pros – my iPhone – my Panerai Luninor Marina wristwatch – my Comme des GARCONS wallet filled with counterfeit $1 million bills to keep my eye on the prize, and a pocketful of Yummy Earth Organic Lollypops for the ladies and any suckers I might encounter.

NoVegans: LOL – you know the girls love those lollipops…

Now if this were a radio broadcast, the music would be slowly creeping in and you’d get that feeling we’d be getting ready to hit you up with a commercial, but that’s not how we do it here. Instead, here’s proof we aren’t playing around when we say we’ve got exclusive tracks. Try to find this one on Hypem… lol

Chew Fu & J-Cast – Barfight on Bakerstreet (Big Room Mix)

Tomorrow, we’re going to pick up where we left off with my man Chew Fu. We’ll cover production, software, and what the future holds, plus we’ve got two more exclusives and four tracks in all, so don’t sleep on this one tomorrow. Keep hitting that refresh button, or better yet subscribe to our RSS feed so you’re always updated as soon as we release new content. Until then… stay true!
John Bourke of !Trash Yourself returned to St. Louis this weekend to play The Pageant with local trashers London Calling. We had an opportunity to catch up with John. Here’s what went down:

NV: How do you like St. Louis?
Bourke: STL is great! This is my 5th time to play here. Always a great time.

NV: What is your #1 must-do/must-see when you visit?
Bourke: I always enjoy going to the park. This trip I made it to the art museum to see the action / abstraction exhibit. Go check it out if you haven’t yet. There is a huge 3 panel piece by Richter that I really loved.

NV: Fill us in on your production / remix work?
Bourke: I’m working on a remix album for El Paso Hot Button at the moment. Hope to have that finished up this month. More originals are on the way after that. We have a new one with The Toxic Avenger that is pretty much done. Called “Die.” It’s like 90% done. We just sent it back to him and are waiting for him to put some finishing touches on it.

NV: Who have you enjoyed working with the most?
Bourke: I just started a new [album] with a LA band, Ultraviolet Sound. It was really amazing working in their studio. The signer Sarah’s dad is a songwriter in LA. He wrote like Aerosmith’s “Living on the Edge” and stuff like that. So we got to use his studio for a few days while he was out of town. I basically got to use all the toys I have been hearing about for years but never seen. Instead of using software compressors we were using a $3,000 hardware compressor for a kickdrum. It was really fun. When collaborating with other artists its generally all done online. It was really cool actually sitting next to someone in the studio and feeding off each other. They are great people to work with in the studio, very passionate about what they are doing. I’m supposed to meet them in Vegas to finish that up in Jan/Feb.

NV: What are you looking forward to in 2009?
Bourke: WRITING! I’ve been traveling a lot more in 2008 which has been great, but I’m ready to finish up the numerous projects which have been started.

NV: When will we see you again?
Bourke: I’ll be back in STL in a few months for a show. Probably shouldn’t say where yet. But stay tuned!

Stay tuned we will, and while we’re waiting check out Trash Yourself’s latest release, “Forget It.”

Trash Yourself – Forget It

Plus, here are a few of our favorites from John Bourke and Trash Yourself.

Trash Yourself – Touch (AC Slater Remix)

John Bourke – What Is Love (The Toxic Avenger Remix)

Download Bourke’s latest mixtape on his myspace and be sure to show him some No Vegans love while you’re there.
