What’s up everybody? This is Jason “Pappy” Andrews and I’m happy to finally post the first episode of “Sunday Skool” to NoVegans.com. I’m a much older dj/producer type and I’ve worked under several names: DJ-SIN, Jason Alkali, Farang:Ba (Crazy Foreigner)… and BagDaddies, CroMagNum, etc. However, everyone has pretty much always called me Pappy. Ever since I put a mixtape out in ’94 called Pappy’s Poop Deck, everyone started calling me Pappy. I guess the name stuck since I looked a lot older than everyone I knew… So, Pappy Andrews it is.

Being in the “music game” for quite some time (1992) I’ve seen many of the same samples, sounds, styles, and techniques come and go, turn and churn… just like the wheel of the Dharma. By no means do I have an encyclopedic memory of all things House Music, but I thought it would be fun to post new and exciting music as well as give a history lesson when I can.

Up first is a fun & meaty track that just hit the scene a couple of months ago. It’s Bass Weasel’s “Break The Bomb (Respect To Kenny Dope Remix)”.

I know (and probably own) 15 different remixes of the tune from which this Bass Weazel track is based. I had to post this one first, because it’s one of the best. Here’s a crappy but LIVE youtube version:

The same sound has even gone LOCO, and was sampled for a recent Pitbull Track:

Here’s a more breakbeat(y) type from Aquasky:

Well, for those of you too young to know where the heck this is coming from, here’s what my old 12″ from 1994 looked like.. (Of course someone stole it out of my crate around 1997 or so):

And I would’ve posted the original track from Kenny “Dope” Gonzales and the Bucketheads circa 1994:::… HOWEVER, it seems that WMG records disabled every single video that contains that track.. WoW! that must have taken a lot of work! So, here’s another mix… that’s very similar to the original:

Since there are no more originals on youtube, here are some downloads instead:

The Bucketheads – The Bomb (Radio Edit)

The Bucketheads – The Bomb (Original Mix)

The Bucketheads – The Bomb (Armand Van Helden Re-Edit)

A bunch of you may have already known all of this, so where’s the skool part? Well, Kenny Dope didn’t create the sound that was an underground hit from 1994-1996 and then absolutely blew up when the radio all over the United States picked it up in late 1996. The horns used in the track were sampled from another uniquely American group…………

CHICAGO: One of the biggest-selling bands in U.S. History, hailing from the Windy City (Chicago, Illinois). Formed in 1967 as ”The Big Thing”, they were one of the first groups to successfully fuse rock-and-roll with a horn section. This blend worked well for them in the late 1970′s, until they started to shift towards a more adult-contemporary style. Also, bassis Peter Cetera was becoming the voice of the band at that time, compared to early days when vocal duties were shared and more attention was paid to the music and not the individual members. They haven’t put out much original material in recent years but tour to the masses every year since they started. In dance music circles, they’re best known for their minor hit ”Streetplayer”, which Kenny “Dope” Gonzales sampled for his monster 1995 anthem, “The Bomb!” (released under the alias of The Bucketheads).

And…. for the rest of the lesson, here’s the original including the horns that are still being sampled today!!

…. Now, you can consider yourself… SKOOLED!
